Sarasota, The Gem
of Florida's West Coast
Few places on
earth are gifted with the magnetism of Sarasota on Florida’s
Gulf Coast. It is a city of culture and fun, and like Camelot, it
is endowed with sunny climate, clean air, and is rife with activities
that entice visitors to return, time and again. The challenge lies
in where to begin the list.
The game of
golf was introduced to the USA in May 1886 when John Hamilton Gillespie,
a Scotsman, laid out Sarasota’s first golf course, 2 greens
at opposite ends of one long fairway. Today, there are more than 45
carefully manicured golf courses in the area, most of which have never
seen snow.
Saltwater and
freshwater fishermen, (ladies, too) send photos from Sarasota of the
‘big ones’ that didn’t get away --- until released,
that is.
The month of
March is spring training camp time for baseball’s Cincinnati
Reds in Sarasota, and nearby are the training camps of the Pittsburgh
Pirates, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Devil
Rays and the Boston Red Sox. Whose hot dogs are best?.
Sarasota’s
Dining Directory list begins with ‘After Dinner and end with
Wine and Spirits.’ Between these "book ends" are 16
ethnic headings from Cajun to Vietnamese. Not included in the above
are New York style delis, seafood restaurants and sizzling steakhouses.
You can dine at waterfront restaurants and be entertained by leaping
dolphins, and cruising boats, or dine al fresco, watching pedestrians
saunter by. There is a bakery on Main Street that specializes in producing
hand made doggy treats from all natural, organic ingredients. Could
you ask for more? Oh yes, the Annual Winefest and Auction is held
in April at the Ritz Carlton. It’s heady!
The Suncoast
Grand Prix Festival is held every year from late June with car shows,
boat races, golf and fishing tournaments, parties galore, and ending
with a parade, and a spectacular fireworks display on July 4th

During
Sarasota’s Film Festival (April) screenings of Academy Award
Masterpieces of cinema will be presented at the historic Asolo Theater.
Each season from November through June, theatergoers can attend 4
different plays in a single weekend in this 500-seat facility built
in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1902.
For the music
lover there are performances by the Florida West Coast Symphony, Sarasota
Concert Band, Sarasota Opera Association, Jazz Cub of Sarasota, and
Sarasota Ballet. Evening performances at the Golden Apple Dinner Theater
frequently offer bouncy musicales. Enjoy it!
The Van Wezel
Performing Arts Hall has many scheduled Broadway productions for presentation
during their annual season.
If world class
shopping is your "thing", Sarasota is the city and the Circle
on St. Armand’s Key is the place for you to demonstrate your
expertise. It’s also delightful dining and window shopping "par
exellence."
Circus Sarasota
puts on a show with their "in the tent" performances.
And don't forget,
there are:
• Lectures to attend at libraries and Universities,
• Royal Lipizzaner Stallions training sessions to amaze you,
• Polo matches to watch, and
• Museums and historical sites to visit.
You won’t be able to do it all in one visit.
