Siesta Key,
The Island Paradise
Here’s
why singles, families, and retirees return again and again to Siesta
Key, the 8 mile long Island Paradise in the Gulf of Mexico! In addition
to being noted for having the "finest, whitest, sand beach in
the world", there are activities available to suit nearly everyone’s
concept of an ideal vacation, and it’s only 30 minutes from
the Sarasota, Bradenton International Airport.
The Island is
a haven for artists, musicians, and writers, some of whom live here
year-round. They contribute to the Siesta Key Art Fair, Craft Fair,
and the Siesta Fiesta, an eclectic gathering of hundreds of booths
displaying art-ware, food and more that "shuts down" the
main drag every April. Original sculptures in copper, bronze, and
ceramics, as well as paintings and photographs are for sale.
If physical
activity is your wish, you can bike on the sand next to the surf,
scuba dive, or even snorkel off Point-of-Rocks and watch the tropical
fish gaze at you. How about deep sea fishing and going home with a
photo of the sailfish that you caught? Go parasailing and see Paradise
as the birds see it. What a thrill!
If you are looking
for an easygoing activity, you can collect shark’s teeth and
shells in the surf, or just sit and bird-watch. Siesta Key is home
to the egret, a white, three-foot tall bird that eats fish, insects
and more. You can see them sitting outside many al-fresco restaurants
waiting for a handout. Watch the Sandpipers dash toward the receding
surf looking for

morsels of seafood, and running back to stay dry
as the next wave rolls in. You can also enjoy the cacophony of groups
of 20 or more parrots all talking at once in our trees. And, don’t
overlook the opportunity to watch the sunset in the Gulf of Mexico.
The east coast
of this sub-tropical Key faces the intra-coastal waterway where one
can spend tranquil hours or days, watching kayaks, yachts, and sailboats
cruise. Rent a boat and wave at the landlubbers.
Talk about food;
there are dozens of restaurants on Siesta Key spanning the range from
deli to discriminating; hot dogs to lobster. A number of them have
received awards for their excellent cuisine. You can dine in air-conditioned
comfort, or al-fresco and see the dolphins play in the Gulf. There
are three nightclubs on the Key serving exotic drinks, food, music,
and entertainment. Beach attire is acceptable at most of them.
If you feel
the need to play golf, visit a museum, attend a concert, enjoy a play,
the Key is connected to the City of Sarasota by two bridges. You can
be there in minutes.
Come and enjoy;
you will come again, and again.
